How can you tell if it is indeed a German cockroach?
German cockroach size
A small German cockroach ranges in size from 0.3 centimeters in length when it hatches, to a little over 1.5 centimeters as an adult.

German cockroach color
Adult German cockroaches are light brown and have two stripes on their head spot, which is the “shield” just behind their head.
German cockroach behavior
Adult German cockroaches have wings, but they cannot fly.
If they fall, they can flap their wings hard enough to stop themselves from falling, but they cannot use their wings to hover.
They run fast, and move very quickly through their environment.
Their relatively long antennae, slightly longer than their body length, serve as powerful sensory devices for assessing their environment, finding food, and receiving messages from other cockroaches.
Adult German cockroaches are slender and slightly smaller than females,
They are slightly larger and wider in the abdomen. When adult female cockroaches become pregnant, they have an egg capsule, which can be clearly seen from the tip of the abdomen.
The egg capsule contains about 40 German cockroach eggs, more or less, which will be carried with it for up to 24 hours before the new cockroaches are ready to hatch. (The picture shows egg cases from an American cockroach but these look the same as those from a German cockroach)
When the new cockroaches open it and crawl out, they go out into the world on their own.
Questions about the German cockroach | Answers |
---|---|
Questions about cockroaches | Short and to the point answers |
How do I know if the cockroach is American or German? | The American is also called the “date cockroach” – 5 cm large, the German is smaller, lighter and between 1-2.5 cm long. |
Where to look for the German cockroach? | The German cockroach loves heat and darkness. Look for it first in the kitchen. Where in the kitchen? Behind the Tami 4, behind the microwave, pull out the oven a little and look behind it, under the stove, in the lower cabinets (look for feces around the hinges), in drawers that you don’t open, and more. |
Where did the German cockroach come to my house? | This type of cockroach arrived with you. It could be in the last move you made, in the last piece of furniture you bought, if you live above a restaurant (there may be quite a few in the restaurant) and that’s how it arrived in your home (it arrives in restaurants along with the cartons of goods), etc. Once the cockroach has arrived at you, its life cycle is a third shorter than the American one, which is why it reproduces quickly. |
How is pest control actually carried out? | Chances are, if you stop it in time, the German cockroach will only be in the kitchen. If that’s the case, empty all the lower cabinets , turn off the counter, move the refrigerator away, and keep objects away from the panels. We will spray with a slightly stronger substance than usual and also put out special gels and traps for German cockroaches. |
What is the price for German cockroach extermination? | Starting at 350 NIS and depending on the infestation and whether it has spread beyond the kitchen. |
Can I combine German cockroach control with regular pest control (cockroaches, ants, etc.) | Certainly, and at a super reduced cost (usually an additional NIS 50-100 to spray the entire house along with the German cockroach) |

Signs of a German cockroach infestation:
What attracts them to your home?
German cockroaches prefer to live in warm, humid places close to sources of food and moisture.
They are often found in commercial kitchen and residential environments, and bathrooms, so these are the two most likely places for their infestation to occur.
You will likely also be able to find them by their feces in the areas they frequent.

This feces may appear as a small, dark, “pepper-like” material left on countertops or in drawers (or, as in the above case, in a closet).
There may also be a type of fecal stain, which appears as dark spots or smears in the corners of rooms, along the tops of doors, or around small cracks and openings in walls.

When German cockroach populations exist in large numbers, a slight, somewhat “musty” odor may be detectable.
Interesting facts about the German cockroach
- German cockroaches have a phenomenal reproduction rate.
- German cockroaches love warmth and humidity.
- The German cockroach spends most of its life in protected hiding places.
- German cockroaches tend to cluster together.
- German cockroach egg capsules are not susceptible to insecticides.
- German cockroaches regularly disperse to new areas
- German cockroaches detect and avoid many insecticides (and are even much more resistant to regular spraying than the American cockroach)

German cockroach sprays
When using sprays, aim for areas where cockroaches prefer to hide.
Avoid spraying walls, floors, baseboards, and countertops because cockroaches spend very little time in these areas. Spray the cabinet under the sink, “behind the cabinet,” under the baseboard, behind the stove, behind the wet bar, behind the refrigerator—think of all the darkest, most humid areas, and those you don’t usually clean.

Powder :
Some insecticides used for German cockroach control are applied as a powder (such as Dorcid powder or diatomaceous earth ).
The most familiar to homeowners are boric acid and diatomaceous earth (Dorcid powder is a substance sold only to exterminators). For cockroach control, diatomaceous earth tends to be more effective.
Cockroaches succumb to diatomaceous earth after crawling over treated surfaces.
The tiny pollen particles stick to the insect’s body and dry out its cuticle – which ultimately causes its death.
Both diatomaceous earth and boric acid maintain their potency almost indefinitely as long as the powder remains dry.
Cockroaches tend to avoid heavy dust accumulations, much like we would avoid walking through a snowstorm (put a thin strip of boric acid powder or diatomaceous earth – don’t overdo it, it will do the job)
The easiest way to apply such a small amount is with a hand-held ‘bulb’ or ‘blower’ duster sold in hardware stores or online.
Key areas to treat with German cockroach powder include cracks in the edges and corners of cabinets; wall/floor junctions, behind refrigerators, stoves, and dishwashers, and yes, there are also cockroaches in Tami 4.
Another potential hiding place for German cockroaches is the empty space under kitchen and bathroom cabinets (which Zoekel is famous for).
This area can be treated by applying the powder through cracks that exist in its upper part.
Access to areas behind dishwashers, stoves, etc. may require removal of the front panel.

Gel bait and traps
Most homeowners will achieve better results against German cockroaches with insecticides formulated as bait.
When used correctly, results similar to professional pest control can be achieved.
Cockroach baits contain a slow-acting insecticide combined with a food attractant. Pests find and swallow the bait and crawl to their deaths.
Unexposed cockroaches may also succumb after indirectly ingesting tiny amounts of the toxic substance (they eat the poisoned cockroach’s feces and thereby die as well).
Some excellent cockroach baits are sold in stores and online.
Popular consumer brands include Combat, Raid, Ortho, and Hotshot. Professional versions of products sold online include Maxforce, Advion, Advance, Avert, and Alpine.
Effective ingredients in such products include fipronil, indoxycarb, dinotefuron, abamectin, and hydramethylnon.

What is important to emphasize when using bait for jacks?
The key to success with the bait method is proper placement.
Areas to treat for German cockroaches include under/around sinks and toilets; behind refrigerators, dishwashers, and stoves; near garbage cans; and inside cabinets and storage areas.
When using the plastic-style bait boxes, it is important to place them on corners and edges of cabinets, countertops, etc. as these are common areas where cockroaches hang out.
Applying bait boxes outside of edges and corners will be much less effective.
Use a broom handle to slide the baits back into hard-to-reach areas, such as behind stoves and refrigerators.
Placing bait boxes behind or under the infested appliance will lure the cockroaches living inside to come out, eat, and be killed.
While plastic bait boxes are convenient and ready to use, gel-type baits applied with a syringe are sometimes more versatile and effective.
The syringe allows you to inject small, pea-sized drops of bait into cracks, corners, edges, and other places where cockroaches reside.
Cockroaches are not attracted to bait from long distances; they come to it during their foraging. Therefore, the more bait flakes you put out, the more likely they are to find and eat them. You may need more than a dozen locations to treat the corners and edges of cabinets and under the kitchen sink. The larger the cockroach infestation, the more locations you will need.
A large cockroach infestation may also require periodic replenishment of the bait consumed by the cockroaches.
Unlike the initial “knockout” of pests that can be expected after a few sprays, cockroaches that feed on bait do not immediately succumb . According to customers who try using the gel alone, it is a process that takes between 14-30 days. In some ways, this is a good thing because it allows them to return to their hiding place and infect others. Once a cockroach has found and fallen for the bait, it usually dies within 1-3 days. A noticeable overall reduction in their infestation should be noticeable within a few weeks.
With cockroach baits, there is usually no need to empty kitchen cabinets or cover food preparation surfaces before treatment. Another advantage is that they are virtually odorless and pose minimal danger to children or pets.
Small cockroaches: How do you get rid of them?
Have you found a small cockroach in your kitchen cabinets? Or even… a lot of small cockroaches? You already know that small cockroaches can be a real nuisance. But what kind of situation are you actually dealing with? And what should you do?
Grab a cup of coffee and get ready to jot down some things, because you’re going to need a plan of action against these little cuties, and you’re going to want to do it fast.
First, we’ll answer some important questions about little cockroaches. Then we’ll show you how to get rid of them—and be free of them forever.
How do little cockroaches even get into your house?
It’s a strange and unfortunate fact: German cockroaches not only seek out buildings where humans live – they don’t even live outside.
So if German cockroaches don’t live in your trees or lawn, how did they get into your house?
This can happen in many ways:
Apartment buildings are notorious for having widespread German cockroach problems.
With few barriers between units, the tiny insects easily crawl through walls from unit to unit and floor to floor.
Small cockroaches in apartment buildings have a little trouble finding food and water. And when they can’t, they simply move to another unit.
So if you live in an apartment, yes – you can blame your neighbors. But know this: you could have brought them too!
Second-hand furniture may have arrived with more than a few tiny blemishes (in other words, with a German cockroach).
Your dry cleaning or laundry might arrive with a few six-legged hitchhikers. And your groceries or food order could bring them right to your kitchen.
HOT SPOTS for high cockroach infestation
Once they get inside German cockroaches have predictable behaviors that you can use against them.
Their hiding spots are particularly important, with two areas in particular:

The bathroom
Unfortunately, the bathroom is one of the hotbeds for small cockroach activity.
There’s nothing like turning on the bathroom light switch at 2am and seeing little cockroaches in the sink!
They’re there for the same reason as the little cockroaches in the shower: These insects dive into drains to drink and pass through the gaps around the pipes to return to their nest.

The kitchen (well maybe we exaggerated with the picture – it’s from a bar, not a home)
The kitchen is undoubtedly the favorite meeting point for the German cockroach.
As soon as the lights are off, these pests start cleaning up crumbs on the floor, leftovers in the sink, food in the garbage and leftovers on the counter – it’s a free buffet for little cockroaches. In the kitchen they have easy access to food, water and shelter, and they often hide in cabinets, under the sink behind the baseboard, behind the stove – in short , everywhere .
Even a dripping garbage disposal is enough to satisfy a cockroach, which can go a month without eating.
4 Rules for a Cockroach-Free Home
Step 1: Deny cockroaches what they need through thorough cleaning
Aside from the fact that cleaning works so well, cleaning is also great because you usually don’t need to buy much beyond a vacuum cleaner bag or two, and more importantly – it’s a great way to do something now to start solving your problem.
Cleaning includes:
- Extraction of food sources
- Clearing out products you don’t use to prevent them from being hidden
- Wash areas with odors that may attract them.
- Removing water sources
Step 2: Killing Cockroaches with Bait Gel (Gel Syringe)
You no longer need to poison the entire building to get rid of a few cockroaches. You certainly don’t need to throw useless cockroach bombs (like the ones they used to throw in sewers that went off immediately when they touched water but made a good impression on the customer).
Today you can kill more cockroaches with less effort using tiny amounts of poison – sometimes not even poison at all.
The best of these products are usually applied where you can’t see, smell, or touch them.
They are called “cockroach baits” and “cockroach gel patches”
These include:
- Gel bait – gel injector for cockroaches We recommend Gulliver gel (and also sell it)
- Gel stickers that attract cockroaches, stick them, and kill them – we also sell those!
Step 3: Pest control
While the cleaning phase is aimed at starving the cockroaches and removing their water supply, the pest control is designed to prevent them from entering in the first place – and to kill existing ones instead (without giving them the option to breed in the future). We also incorporate an innovative pesticide called: Tamfrid into the spraying process (sold with a pest control license only, of course), along with gel baits (Gulliver – as of February 2024 gives the best results of all), along with monitoring stickers and other measures to solve the German cockroach problem and leave you with a kitchen (and home) free of pests.
Step 4: Education and adoption of healthy habits
- Check grocery bags and food deliveries before bringing them inside.
- Never bring yard sale furniture or other used items home without checking for small cockroaches.
- Leave your kids’ bags and clothes outside the door if they’ve been playing at a friend’s house that could be a cockroach problem, then check their clothes.

Small cockroaches in the kitchen: what to do?
Cleaning – A clean kitchen is your first line of defense against small cockroaches in the kitchen, especially German cockroaches.
Wipe down your countertop and sink daily to remove food crumbs that may serve as food sources.
Additionally, clean small kitchen appliances, such as the toaster, microwave, and oven, which can accumulate crumbs.
Don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink or on the counter overnight, as this is when cockroaches are most active. Keep your trash can tightly sealed and take out the trash regularly.
