Controlling pigeon lice isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you start itching. I guess many times you suspect maybe the new clothes you bought, the new washing powder you tried, or you’re just allergic to the changing weather.
But slowly, the unpleasant feeling creeps in that maybe this time it’s not the same, it’s itchier, especially around your bedroom, but you’re still clueless. No more! Watch the video above (and turn it up) and see if you see anything similar, if so – keep scrolling and order a pest control service (we recommend Mezikis ).
The symptom | In detail |
---|---|
Itching, not bites | It is very difficult to find signs of pigeon gnats – what you will find is mainly itching on the body (less bites) |
Are you itching non-stop? | Look for a pigeon nest in the vicinity of your home – it could be in the window sill, in the window sill, or anywhere else where it would be convenient for a pigeon nest to be built. Did you find one? Get rid of him. |
Is it possible without pesticides? | Unlike other pests, if you suspect pigeon lice, the only way to get rid of them is through pest control. |

Pigeon lice/pigeon tick control
Pigeon lice, or pigeon mites as they are called, are tiny (and fast) creatures that cause us to itch all over our bodies. Pigeon lice cause less bites than bedbugs or fleas and more annoying itching.
If you are only bitten at night, note that it is most likely bed bugs.
If you are only bitten on your ankles – note that these are most likely fleas.
Have you encountered pigeon lice? Please note that in this case (unlike other pests for which we have published guides on how to get rid of them yourself) you will have to carry out pest control.
Questions about pigeon lice and mites | Short and to the point answers |
---|---|
Where do we find pigeon lice? | Pigeon lice love warm, humid places and will be seen mainly around bird nesting areas (bird nests) and in houses where pigeons, chickens, etc. are raised. If they have already arrived, look for them around the walls, bed bases, and window frames. |
Can pigeon lice live on humans? | Although they can take blood from us to grow (and that’s if they don’t find what they want in the pigeon’s nest), once they take their blood ration from us, they will fall back to the ground. So the answer is no. |
Do pigeon lice get under the skin? | No – they will not live under our skin (unlike, for example, scabies). |
Do pigeon lice live on clothes? | Pigeon lice generally do not live on humans, but if they do, they can “hire” on our clothes and thus move from place to place in the house. |
Pigeon lice bite – what does it look like? | It is usually itching and the body heals before you even see a bite. But if you have seen it – you will see a red dot (in rare cases swollen) that will mainly cause itching. It is very similar to bed bug bites, except that with bed bugs you usually see the bites that come in a series (of between 2-3 and sometimes more) in each area. What are pigeon lice?
Pigeon lice (pigeon lice) are a common name for lice, and their main food is the chicks that grow inside the bird’s nest (or the pigeon nest near the window of your house).

What do pigeon lice look like?
These tiny insects are 1 mm in size, relatively light gray-black in color until after they eat their blood meals, then they take on a slightly more reddish-brown color. It’s true that they feed mainly on birds outside, but when you feel them on you – it’s a sign that they’re also feeding on you.
Where do pigeon lice (pigeon lice) come from?
Pigeon lice will usually be found near areas where pigeons or other birds (pigeons, doves, etc.) nest. Once they run out of food (inside the nest) they will come to our homes in search of alternative food (usually us).
They will enter our homes many times if the birds’ nest is in the chimney, window sill, and in the eaves next to which there is access to our homes (often common in large iron windows – where there is a constant space for pigeons to build a nest).
Many times, it is the solar water heaters that save us on electricity that are a magnet for pigeons. They find an excellent place to build a nest there, and if the distance between the pigeon nest and our house is short, the pigeon lice’s path to our house is also short. Be sure to check the roof from time to time and make sure that there are no pigeon nests nearby.
Where do pigeon lice (pigeon mites) hide?
Pigeon lice, like almost all pests, arrive mainly in the spring – summer season. They love warm weather. At home, they will be found mainly around windows, window sills or bed frames, at the base of the bed and bedside tables. In 99% of cases, if it is pigeon lice that have come to you, there will be a pigeon nest nearby. It can be right next to the window of your house or a few meters from you. If you identify the nest – destroy it quickly (or alternatively, we will do it for you)
They are active mainly in spring – summer, although in Israel, as in Israel, there is warm weather even in October – December.

How do you know if it’s really pigeon lice and mites?
It’s hard to find signs of pigeon lice, mainly because they’re tiny and come in relatively small numbers. Yes, that’s despite the fact that they’re incredibly itchy!
After you start scratching (remember – not bites but more scratching) – look for red marks around the base of the bed, the walls and the ceiling. And of course – look for a pigeon’s nest .
Pigeons, pigeons, and birds in general are the main food for pigeon lice, and if there are no birds and pigeons in the area, pigeon lice will not survive for long. If you feel mild bites or severe itching without signs of bites, unlike other pests where we offer you solutions that you can implement yourself, here you need pest control in general and pigeon lice control in particular.

Where will pigeon lice bite us?
Pigeon lice and ticks will bite us all over our bodies. Unlike bed bugs, which only bite at night (they can also bite anywhere on the body), and unlike fleas, whose bites will initially only start at the ankle, pigeon lice will bite anywhere on the body. First, make sure it’s not a bed bug (since the treatment for bed bugs is completely different).
Do pigeon lice transmit diseases?
Pigeon lice do not transmit diseases. Rarely, some will develop an allergy as a result of their bites, but in most cases it ends with just itching.

How to prevent pigeon lice?
To prevent pigeon lice, you must first prevent their source. Their source will be the pigeon nest in the vicinity of the house. Go up to the roof and check if there is a new pigeon nest on your roof that you have not noticed. Many times in large windows there are gaps that provide the pigeon with everything it needs to nest there.
In very large windows – especially on the side that is never opened (left side) – the pigeons notice this and sometimes start building their nest there too.
In short – wherever there are pigeon lice, there is also a pigeon nest – if you start seeing a pigeon nest and you want to prevent the side effects (pigeon lice) in advance, remove the nest.
I was stung – how to treat?
First, if you feel unwell – see a doctor. Apply an ointment to your body that will soothe the itchy area and order a lice extermination service.
What is the life cycle of pigeon lice?
The life cycle of pigeon lice and lice mites consists of 4 stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. From egg to adult, it takes them an average of 7 days and they have a full life of 90 days.

Pigeon lice control – how is it done?
Pigeon lice control is carried out on the entire floor, the walls up to a height of 1.5 m, the window sills, around the windows, on the bed base (not on the mattress), on the shelves, and in general – anywhere where pigeon lice can hide.
Unlike most pests – here you only need to exterminate the infested area. If you are only bitten in one room – treat only that room and save money. If you don’t know where you are bitten, treat the entire house and spray against pigeon lice in all parts of the house.
After exterminating pigeon lice, you should leave the house for an hour. For pregnant women and babies, we recommend 6 hours, and for animals, between 6-12 hours, depending on the animal.
