In the following article ( Termites in the Home – The Complete Guide ) you will be presented with several ways to avoid termites in the home . Every home is different , so it is always recommended to consult with Mezikis in order to take the most effective course of action to prevent the infestation or treat the problem.
Whether you should just place termite feeding boxes on the mud trenches, or treat with drilling, a combination of the two, or even just place external boxes – since every house is different, the signs are not always the same in every house and the method of action varies accordingly – it is best to consult with us so that we can explain to you what course of action you (and we) should take.
Method of operation
How is this done?
The classic method – drilling
Drilling every 50-100 cm and inserting 1-3 liters of pesticide specifically for termites (named Permis / Terminator)
Termite gel
Sometimes when we use the classic drilling method, we will use termite gel near the mud channels. The gel is designed so that the termites will take the poison (bait) to the nest – and poison the nest from the root. We will use the gel only at the same time as drilling and not instead (unfortunately, the gel alone does not solve the problem).
Indoor Feeding Stations – For Termites – Nemesis
The Mezikis team was trained by the “Rimi” company on the Nemesis method. In this method, we wrap the mud trenches in boxes and insert poisoned bait into the box. The termites will take the bait to the nest and poison it from the root.
Outdoor Feeding Stations – Nemesis Method
In this method, we will dig a small trench, place the box along with the poisoned bait/wood (as non-poisoned bait) around the house at a distance of 2-5 meters between boxes. After 60-90 days, we will arrive to examine which feeding station the termites visited and replace the non-poisoned bait with poisoned bait.
So what should I choose?
Every home is different and we will tailor the appropriate treatment to each home like a glove.

How do Mezikis treat termites in your home/garden?
So before you read the entire Torah we wrote about termites, we will give you this in its entirety (or “imaluk”): 1. We come to you (after we have talked, you have sent us videos/pictures, we have understood the size of the house, the damage and given you a price estimate , etc.) with the appropriate equipment. The appropriate equipment is divided into 3: 2. The drilling method – drilling with a gun between the pavers at a distance of 60-100 cm between drillings, inserting 1-3 liters into the hole and closing with a gun. 3. Applying gel as an additional treatment around the mud channels if the channel is active. 4. The Nemesis method, in which we will “wrap” the mud trench in a feeding box and there we will insert the bait that the termites will take to the nest and poison it from the root. 5. The Nemesis method can be applied indoors on canals and outdoors in an open area – dig a small hole, place the box along with the bait, and the termites will arrive on their own, take the poison, and poison the nest from the root. 6. Every home is different, so we will do the diagnosis over the phone, and in any case, you will know in advance what we will do, how it will be done, and how much it will cost you.

What are the main signs of termites in the house?
1. Termites, dead or alive. 2. Mud ditches. 3. Hollow tree.
Termite control in the home – dead winged termites scattered around – a sure sign that there are termites in the home
How do you identify termites in your home?
Termites are light-colored, about half a centimeter long. They appear to have a head and body because their thorax is connected to their abdomen. Their tentacles are straight.
Many people mistakenly call termites white ants, but contrary to appearance, ants are actually darker and have three body parts – head, thorax and abdomen. Ants usually have narrow waists and their tentacles are “bent”.
Winged termites are darker in color, with a wide body and a pair of wings that are equal in size and shape. Their body is about half a centimeter long. Termites shed their wings quickly after a short flight. In contrast, winged ants have a wide body and two pairs of wings that differ in size and shape. (The front wings are larger).
A mud pit that termites create – to avoid being exposed to sunlight – is a sure sign of termites in the house.
Ways to prevent termites in the home
We have written a number of tips for preventing termites in your home – this is if you come to us before the problem breaks out, but if the problem already exists – pest control is the best way to protect your home and save you money and additional headaches.
Reduce contact between tree and soil
Most of the areas infested with termites in Israel are located in areas where there is wood and soil, especially under houses.
Remove wood, paper, cardboard, or any cellulose-based waste from around the structure.
Keep the wall coverings at least 3 centimeters above the ground.
If you have a wooden fence around your house, check for rotted areas in the wood. You can also use termite-resistant paint to prevent termites from taking up residence on your fence.
Purchase professional anti-termite equipment or call Mezikis and we will solve your problem quickly.
Mud trench on wood outside the house – also be sure to keep away wooden surfaces, plywood, and anything else that could bring termites with it (which you don’t really need).
Keep plants away from your home.
Although we all love to grow plants around our homes, there are some plants that provide a pathway for termites to enter. In addition, plants make it difficult to identify termites in wood or in cracks in the foundation of your home. In order to protect your home, we will suggest some methods –
Keep all shrubs around the house trimmed and maintain a distance of about 30 centimeters between the shrubs and the walls of the house. Pruning the shrubs also improves air circulation and allows damp areas to dry more quickly, making it possible to identify termite tubes that have created damage.
Keep it short and trimmed.
Use pine needles for mulch. Pine needles are much less likely to irritate burrowing termites than wood mulch. If pine needles are not available in your area, consider using other inorganic materials that will create a barrier between the soil and your home.
Keep moisture out of your home and you won’t find termites in it.
Termites love moisture, which will usually be found in the base area of your home and in crevices. To keep termites away, use the following recommended tips –
Make sure that the drainage channels are a few meters away from the structure, and also check that they are not accumulating moisture.
Protect the roof and gutters from leaks.
Check the gutters to make sure the water is directed against the structure.
Keep sprinkler heads pointed toward your home. Check your home for plumbing leaks.
Make sure there is no water accumulation from air conditioners, clothes, dryers, or any electrical appliances.
Install a vapor barrier in tight areas.
Remove food areas
Termites nest in wood and other paper products. By keeping your home free of food for termites, you will make it less attractive to them.
Keep dead trees and roots away from your home.
Keep wood scraps or wood leftovers from renovations away from your home.
Don’t leave newspapers, cardboard boxes, and other paper products in your home for long periods of time. Be generally careful about their use and leaving in the home.
Recycle paper and wood products, or store important papers on high floors.
Sealing gaps
Different materials such as wood, metal, concrete and PVC expand and contract in different ways and over different periods of time. This process can lead to cracks and gaps that become entry points for termites. Since termites can enter a structure if there is a hole as small as 0.07 cm, it is a good idea to seal these cracks as soon as you notice them.
To protect your home from termites , seal cracks in water tanks with foam or crack caulk.
If the pipes show signs of rust or moisture, make sure there are no cracks or leaks that create moisture that attracts termites. Use concrete to seal the cracks.
Remove any rotten or damaged wood and replace it with termite-resistant materials such as steel framing or pressure-resistant wood.
Questions about termites
Short answers
How to identify termites?
Found an insect? Compare with the photos here or send them to us – dead winged termites, mud trenches, sawdust or a hollow lintel.
How much does termite control cost?
Starting at 30 NIS per meter. The price depends on whether you treat the entire house (preferably) or just the spot where the infestation occurred.
How long do you have to leave after termite control?
Termite control is usually carried out in all parts of the house and takes several hours (depending on the size of the house). After the control is complete, you must leave for one hour.
Keep winged termites away during the breeding season
In early spring, winged termites breed to establish new colonies. Here are some tips to prevent them from entering your home:
Invite a professional (we recommend ourselves, of course) to check if there are cracks in your roof through which termites can enter your home, and if necessary, repair the cracks as quickly as possible.
Seal your windows if they have cracks.
Hire a professional to place termite feeding stations around your home (with bait only, no poisons) to check for termites near your home. If so, then pest control measures need to be taken.
Order a termite inspection for your home on a regular basis.
While it’s always a good idea to use a checklist, it’s an even better idea to have an annual termite inspection performed by a professional. The professional can diagnose specific termite access points that aren’t always visible and also detect early signs of an infestation.
Five signs to help you check if termites are hiding in your home
Termites are an international problem. It is estimated that termites cause tens of millions of shekels of damage per year. Protecting your home from termites before they invade is one of the best ways to save money and protect your family when it comes to destructive insects.
Termites living in your home for years can cause thousands of shekels in damage. This type of damage is usually not covered by insurance and even reduces the value of the apartment if termites are found in the apartment (between 10-14 percent) and have not been properly treated. (We have had more than one case where tenants bought an apartment not knowing that there were termites there and they had to replace the entire kitchen! )
In order to protect your home and avoid termites, you should look for signs on a regular basis and implement a termite protection plan with the help of a company that inspects homes for termites annually.
Bubbles in wooden floors
Bubbles or marks on a wood floor can indicate termites above or below the floor. Termites can cause damage to the floor, which may look like water damage.
Hollow or damaged tree
Damage to wood can be found above or below walls, floors, and more. This damage can be caused by termites that eat the wood in search of food, leaving deep grooves. Over time, the grooves damage the wood and create a lot of damage. Hollow wood usually looks like a honeycomb and has an echoing sound.
Evidence of a multitude of termites
Abandoned termite wings tend to be found near closed windows, doors, and other strategic locations in your home. This is caused when termites leave their nests to mate and find a place to start a family. When they land, the termites intentionally fold their wings because they will never need them again. Their wings are the same size, while ants have a pair of larger wings (in their front part).
Another type of mud tunnels that termites in the house created
Mud pipes (“mud channels”)
Pencil-sized mud tubes may be found anywhere the ground meets your home or any food source, such as a tree.
This is because termites live under the rubble and come up above the ground to search for food, which is often the structure of the house. Termites need a certain level of humidity and temperature to survive. Their tunnels prevent dry, cool air from entering, making your home an excellent environment.
Termite droppings
Another type of termite lives inside wood. As they dig and eat the wood they have invaded, they create large cavities that they tend to keep clean. In order to keep them clean, they create holes through which they excrete their feces. Since these termites eat wood, their feces also contain wood, which looks like small black or brown granules . Such an appearance may indicate the presence of wood-dwelling termites.
Unfortunately, even if there are no signs of termites, it is not possible to say for sure that they are not in your home. The damage caused by termites is not always visible, but when the damage is visible, it may be irreversible. Therefore, it is best to be cautious when it comes to termite infestations in your home.
How are termite colonies formed?
Termites are destructive creatures that every homeowner must be wary of. They can eat your home, invade wood, and threaten the stability of the structure by taking up residence within it.
The damage doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, and in most cases, until termites settle inside your home, you won’t notice that there’s a serious problem.
So how do termite colonies form, and what should you look for when checking for termite activity in your home?
Termites are social creatures. They form large colonies based on a hierarchy consisting of three main groups: producers, workers, and soldiers. Each group takes care of a different job in the kingdom.
In a classic group of termites, there will be a pair of producers: the king and queen. The king and queen termites produce pheromones, a scent that signals mating, the scent is distributed throughout the colony to prevent worker termites from becoming adult producers.
Depending on the species, the colony will contain several types of termites, including juveniles, workers, soldiers, and producers . The queen establishes the colony by laying eggs until the colony reaches a certain size. She then allows some of the young termites to become secondary queens who will lay more eggs to maintain the colony’s size. Now let’s dive into the roles in the hierarchy and how they interact with each other.
The workers
In a colony, workers are soft-bodied, wingless termites. They are often the largest group in the colony, and when searching for infested wood, they are the termites most likely to be found.
Workers care for the eggs and young termites, forage for food, feed and care for the nest, and maintain the structure of the nest. In some colonies, workers are usually the young or sterile adults.
The soldiers
The role of these termites is to protect the colony. They are usually larger than other termites. They may have a darker head and larger jaws than the workers. The soldiers’ role is to guard and defend the colony from attackers.
The manufacturers
Producers are the termites that reproduce. Their body color is darker than other termites. When mature, they have two pairs of wings of the same size. After flying once to reproduce, they shed their wings and establish new colonies.
The Queen
The queen is the largest, several times the body size of a worker termite. Her main job is to lay eggs, sometimes laying several thousand a day. In some colonies, individual termites are able to replace the king or queen if they die, but their role is to control the population and the expansion of the kingdom over time.
Before mating, the new king and queen burrow into the ground and dig a royal opening in the moist soil. The king and queen fill their nest with soil, mucus, and their own feces. They then mate.
After mating, the king and queen spend the rest of their lives underground. The worker termites provide them with food. The queen lays between 6-12 eggs about a week after mating, thus establishing the colony. An adult queen lays thousands of eggs each year.
The King
The king serves as the other half of the queen bee. He helps keep the colony stable and strong. He is smaller in size than the queen and is kept at an average worker size. The main difference is his dark color. Apart from keeping the colony strong, the other functions of the king are unknown. However, it is clear that the colony would not grow and thrive without his help.
The new breed
Termites produce new colonies by breeding. A new colony has the ability to reproduce independently and grow. Unfortunately, these colonies can settle anywhere in your home, not just near the original colony. Termites can reside in your home, under your home, or in their yard, and they are able to sustain themselves without contacting their original colony.
Types of termites
Subterranean termites
Subterranean termites are the most common. This is because termites love the cold, damp environment found underground.
Underground, termites have the optimal conditions in terms of moisture to thrive, but termites feed on cellulose—the fibrous material found in trees and plants. If wooden doors, steps, or decks touch the ground, termites have easy access from their underground homes to a food source. But they can also access food through cracks in your home or through mud tunnels that provide a quick way for worker termites to move outside the colony in search of food.
Termite colonies in the house
Although most termite nests are underground, termites can also build nests inside your home. It all depends on the species of termite common in your area and the stage of your home. In addition to subterranean termites, there are other types that can damage your home –
Dry wood termites
Unlike the termites mentioned above, drywood termites do not have to live in a damp area to survive. As their name suggests, they need dry wood. Their habitat means living in a dry log or inside a tree in your yard, but sometimes that means beyond the tree into your home. There, they are only able to do damage.
Damp wood termites
These termites prefer a moist, or even damp, environment. When they establish a new nest in your home, they look for damp areas. These areas can be wood after a leak or wood in a basement and tight spaces where moisture holds the wood together.
How do termites expand their colonies?
A colony is usually built over 6-7 years. After 7 years, it is ready to begin expanding. During this time, termites of a special type (SWARMER) are created, these termites are male and female producers. Their color is black-brown depending on the type. They are usually about half a centimeter long and have grayish wings. During late winter and early spring, the male and female leave their nest to breed with thousands or even millions of other flying termites.
Termites do not fly well, so they usually fly a few meters from the nest. However, they can move great distances with the help of the wind. Winged termites are able to land on the roofs of buildings and sometimes move inside. Some of these termites are eaten by frogs, toads, birds or spiders during the mating season, so usually only a few termites survive and build a new nest. Each colony produces several such termites so that at least some will survive this flight.
What happens during their flight?
Male and female termites mate during their flight. The female releases a pheromone to attract the male to nest and mate. Winged termites shed their wings shortly after landing and spend the rest of their lives without flying at all. The male and female seek out an area with high humidity to build their nest.
As their nest expands, the queen allows more producer termites to create more workers to feed the colony. A mature termite nest can contain anywhere from sixty thousand to a million termites.
Termite control – drilling method – drills, injects pesticides specifically for termites and seals with a gun (4 mm hole)
What does termites mean in your home?
If you see winged termites or evidence of termites near your home, there is probably a colony in the area. This means it is time to call a professional to inspect the house and perform preventative treatment (either by drilling and injecting material and/or placing termite feeding stations).
Termites are different from other insects in that they live in large, organized groups. A colony can range in size from two termites to a million or more. Therefore, it is advisable to treat a termite infestation quickly.
Professional control and protection against termites
Termite infestations can happen anytime, anywhere. This doesn’t mean that you’re neglecting your home or that there’s something wrong with your property. But it does mean that you need to address the problem as soon as possible.
If you had to choose one insect that will probably never go extinct, the right choice would be termites . They have been around for over 250 million years (there are at least 2,000 species worldwide) and there are probably thousands of them living in nests in the ground under or around your home.
Of course, one of the last things any homeowner wants is a termite infestation in their home or business, so it’s important to know how to identify them and learn the steps you can take to prevent them from entering.
The most common types of termites in Israel
Subterranean termites
As their name suggests, these termites live under the bark. This species is also the most common type in homes. They invade wood through mud tunnels that they build inside their homes and through the soil into the homes where they eat the wood. Over time, they cause a lot of damage. When you find mud tunnels, it is a sign that you have termite activity in your home.
Subterranean termite colony
These termites are usually more threatening when it comes to the damage they cause. One reason for this is the size of their colonies. The queen of the colony can live up to 15 years, lay 200 eggs a day, and a mature colony can contain a million termites. More termites mean the destruction of the wood while more termites forage for food. As mentioned, if you find mud tunnels, this is a telltale sign of termite activity in your home.
Dry wood termites
These termites live inside wood and get the moisture they need to survive either from the wood itself or from the salts in the air. This is why these termites are often found in damp areas.
Its termite colonies are smaller than those of subterranean termites, and a mature colony may contain only a few hundred or thousands of termites. The male and female winged termites create new colonies in the crevices of the wood.
Additionally, piles of feces are another way to identify their presence. When the feces pile up, it can look like sand and is sometimes found near windows and doors. Since drywood termites do not live in the ground, mud trenches are not a sign of their presence.
Termite protection in the home
So far, we have listed some signs of termite activity. These signs are often based on the type of termite you are dealing with. When you notice these signs, we recommend contacting a professional to help you deal with the problem rather than trying to solve them yourself.
Even if you don’t see any signs of termites, it’s a good idea to have an annual termite inspection, as termites will forage 24 hours a day. Just because termites haven’t invaded your home yet, it’s no guarantee that they won’t in the future.
And today – as of February 2024, it is easier than ever to place feeding boxes with termite bait to check whether or not there are termites in the area. Unlike other insects where “lack of knowledge” is better – here it is better to know in advance if there is a problem in order to adapt the solution.
This solution will be dozens of times cheaper than waiting for the termites to destroy your door frames and furniture.
Termite Control Price – How much does it cost to exterminate termites in a house?
Number of rooms (size in square meters)
Termite control price
Local termite control (usually around door frames)
For one lintel, the price is between 500-800 NIS, for a larger quantity of lintels the price increases slightly (usually between 100-300 per lintel).
Termite control in an apartment in a building
The price per meter ranges from 30-40 NIS per square meter. This means that a 3-room apartment of 60 square meters will cost between 1800-2400 NIS (depending on the floors, termite infestation, etc.).
Termite control in a private home
The price ranges from 30-40 NIS per square meter and decreases as the area treated is larger. In addition, there is an additional cost for a “protective belt” that must be installed around the house in private homes.
Termite control in the building and other spaces
For pest control other than pest control in an apartment, building, or around window frames, in most cases we must come (free of charge) to assess the work and give you a price quote on the spot.

Termite Feeding Stations – Do They Really Work? It’s innovative, it’s effective, and it could revolutionize the field – Termite Feeding Stations – It Works!
The termites we have in Israel are mainly subterranean termites – the ones that break out of the ground and suddenly enter our apartment (they can even arrive in the thousands). We don’t really know if there are termites or not until they appear in our homes, so if we have a way (and today there is) to check before we make a decision whether it is worth doing termite control or not, or if we want to monitor the termite problem after termite treatment – today there is a way and it is called – a termite feeding station.
At Mezikis we provide termite prevention services before moving into a new home and termite treatment when you first see them in your home.
